I Wanna Work in Argos

£120.00

Poem, Pen on Paper, 21 × 30cm, 2024

I Wanna Work in Argos reimagines the everyday retail environment as a site of humour, fantasy, and power play. The artist drew inspiration from sitcoms and mockumentaries that elevate the mundane such as The Job Lot, This Country and The Office. The work centres on a fictional Argos employee whose authority extends beyond workplace protocols into sexual and social dominance. Shifting from the banal to the surreal, the poem challenges assumptions about “ordinary” jobs, revealing them instead as ecosystems of status, desire, and control. By writing in the first person, the artist playfully blurs the boundary between lived experience and imagined persona.
